Slovenia

22.11.2011, travelfood

Slovenia is a wonderful little country, with a little of everything. There are high mountains, interesting sights, Mediterranean beaches, ski resorts, beautiful buildings, functional infrastructure and good food to be found. After the independence and the break-down of Yugoslavia, peace remained in the country and its wealth flourished. Slovenia was spared from unrest because there was just one major ethnic group in the country instead of several mixed up in several countries during the transition time in the 1990s. Now the country has all the opportunities to become one of the major travel countries.

We travelled in October to its capital Ljubljana and rented a car for a day to travel around Slovenia in, yes, one day. First we travelled north, to Lake Bled, situated in beautiful alpine scenery and thereafter south to picturesque Piran by the Mediterranean, where we had baked fish with spinach potatoes. After that we drove back to Ljubljana and stopped along the road in Postojna, where the greatest caves of Europe are. Nearby Postojna we visited the interesting Predjama Castle, which is partly carved from a rock wall.

Slovenian food is very stodgy. We had for example goulash, venison in cherry sauce and wild boar. Truffles are less expensive in Slovenia than in its neighbor country Italy, so I had to taste that delicacy. If you for some reason are still hungry, you can taste the burek meat pastries that are sold by several street vendors. For dessert I had apfelstrudel – the apple pie for which Slovenia’s other neighbor Austria is famous.

Weather is particularly interesting in Slovenia. When we drove to the Alps, it was rainy until we reached a tunnel and in its other end, sun shined. Although it was chilly in the Alps in October, an hour later by the Mediterranean it was 20 degrees Celsius warmer. Slovenian alpine villages have all the opportunities to develop into as famous, but less expensive, ski resorts as the jet-set after-skis in Austria and Switzerland.
