Faroe Islands

02.10.2023, travelfood

We travelled with flight points from the SAS airline bonus alliance from Copenhagen to the Faroe Islands and it is a worthy way of using few points on a trip that otherwise would have cost a lot. Because money is needed, since food and accommodation is expensive on the remote islands. The trip is nevertheless worth every penny, since the visit is truly unique: the views are outstanding and the food is superb. We travelled during sunny summer and we were lucky with the weather, since there are almost daily showers of rain in the region.

The Faroe Islands belong to Denmark but you feel the Danish presence mainly just by the language. Since Denmark is filled with bicycles, you soon realize that the Torshavn town is filled with cars. While the Danes are relaxed and talkative, the Faroe are more quiet and more stone-faced. Maybe it is because of the fact that the islands are far from everything. Is also apparent that the islanders have sought comfort and joy from the church, since there is a variety of different churches in Torshavn. I will not comment the controversial ”sport” that whale and dolphin flocks are every now and then slaughtered in narrow bays.

If you choose to go by local bus from the airport at Vagar Island to main town Torshavn, you receive a splendid sightseeing of the Faroe countryside. You can see fishing villages, churches, waterfalls, steep mountain hills and long-haired sheep. It is easy to compare the Faroe Islands with Iceland that is fairly close-by, but while Iceland receives its free energy from geothermal heat, the Faroe Islands rely on wind power. While both Iceland and the Faroe Islands practically lack trees and forests, the difference is that Iceland has stony landscape while the Faroe Islands’ hills are covered with green grass.

In Torshavn it is easy to choose the cheaper pizzas, hamburgers and ethnical food, but by looking up restaurants in advance, you can also find fish and lamb meals, which you might rather relate to the islands than fastfood. The food is expensive, but I must say that I have never had so big and fresh shrimps as the ones I had in Torshavn, so that is something that you gladly pay for!
