Australia (in English)

07.01.2014, travelfood

My Australian visit was to Sydney and its surroundings only and it is obvious that there are many other types of climate and other sceneries than on the east coast. Australians seemed relaxed and it felt as everything is possible in that country and with a friendly smile as well.

Sydney is a big city and easy to enjoy. There are lots of parks, sea, attractions for both children and adults, and lots of interesting restaurants. Besides Asian restaurants you may taste the Australian grilled food. Barbeques or barbies are mostly made of beef, but combined with fish the dish is called surf & turf. In Australia I wanted of course to taste cangaroo meat (with bad conscience) and it turned out to be surprisingly chewy.

When in Sydney, you may probably want to see Australian animals such as cangaroos, coalas, emus or crocodiles and preferably in zoos. Most well-known of these is probably Taronga Zoo, but I would like to recommend less known Featherdale Park, which is easily accessible by train. Featherdale is situated halfway to Katoomba, where you can have a glimpse of Australia’s wilderness. In this area called Blue Mountains, there is the famous rock formation called Three Sisters and there is actually a blue glow over the wilderness here.

For us Europeans it feels strange to visit Australia, where the season is opposite compared to ours. I visited Sydney in May, and autumn was really clearly approaching. On New Year’s Eve, when the northern hemisphere is at its coldest, we see on television that New Year’s partygoers by the Opera house are wearing summer clothes. If Australia would not be so far away, I would spend all winters in this incredible country!
