Tunisia (in English)

01.10.2024, travelfood

If you are a keen package tour traveler, you have probably visited Monastir, Hammamet or Sousse in Tunisia. At least before the terror attacks that unfortunately seem to have paralyzed travels to this interesting North African country. But the capital Tunis is close to Central Europe and very well worth an extended weekend visit also for the independent traveler. My visit was during Ramadan in spring 2024 and lots of security patrols were visible, so you might therefore feel safe or unsafe.

Tunis has an interesting casbah, but also an international, almost Parisian atmosphere around Boulevard Habib Bourgiba. From Tunis you cannot really make a daytrip to the Saharan desert, but you can go to ancient Carthage and the picturesque blue-and-white town Sidi Bou Said by the Mediterranean. Traveler guides opt for a local train to Sidi Bou Said, but the day I wished to go there, the line was not operational so they sold me a local bus ticket instead. Be aware that the bus operational times are not very frequent and difficult to figure out. This also goes for the public bus between the airport and the Tunis city center. You might wish to take a taxi instead.

Having meals during Ramadan might be tricky but I found a few restaurants serving tourists during daytime. I had ojja (more known as shakshuka with tomatoes, onions and eggs) with mutton merguez (a spicy sausage). Another day I had couscous with a boiled fish on top. For local sweets, spices and culinary eye candy, I strongly suggest a visit to the Tunis food market.
