New York (in English)

19.03.2012, travelfood

The Big Apple is truly one of the most interesting cities in the world. I was thrilled about my first arrival to JFK Airport, continuing by bus to a station in Manhattan through a tunnel not getting a very good glimpse about the jungle of tall buildings. When I stepped out of the bus to a shadowy street, I let my sight follow the façade of the nearest skyscraper up and up, all the way to the top, where the sun shone, and I realized I had come a long way from home. Afterwards I have seen taller buildings in Asia, but there is still that very something about New York.

That very something is the people of New York. Nowhere else have I seen so many different skin tones but still so similar individuals: proud but tolerant, self-aware but friendly and so interesting New Yorkers. Although there are many city parts, such as Chinatown, Little Italy, Harlem and Brooklyn, which act as homogenous ghettos, the city as a whole is united but a distinctive part of America.

Personally I regard Central Park as one of the most interesting sights of New York. The park is huge and contains both forests and lakes, but furthermost interesting New Yorkers to watch and study. The famous skyline of Manhattan is best viewed from the ferry to Liberty Island (Statue of Liberty), from Brooklyn Bridge or from the roof of Empire State Building. For shoppers I recommend the brand clothes low-cost store Century21 on southern Manhattan just by Ground Zero.

Of course there is a restaurant for every taste in New York. Perhaps the most typical thing to do is buying a hot dog from one of the street kiosks. Or Jewish kosher food such as mushroom knish (small pie). Hamburger bars are to be found in every street corner and I reveal my own favorite chain: Wendy’s. Sandwich bars are smaller and more individual than the big chains. It is also common to eat ethnic food in their own neighborhoods, such as Italian in Little Italy and Chinese in Chinatown.
