Denmark

During the latest years Denmark has unfortunately become mainly a passing-through-country for me when aiming for central Europe by car or train. It is always fun, though, to stop for a few hours in Copenhagen. For many non-Scandinavian travelers Copenhagen is in fact the only place they visit in Denmark. When my sister and I were kids, the whole family travelled by caravan car around Denmark and both the scenery and atmosphere were among the best I experiences as a child. After that many of the ferry crossings between the islands have been replaced with newly built bridges.

Copenhagen is situated on the island of Själland, which is the largest one in Denmark. The island of Fyn on the other hand is famous for its birth-home of children’s story writer H C Andersen in Odense, while the remote island of Mön is unfortunately often forgotten. Möns klint is a high “rock” or steep, white sand wall and extremely worthwhile to visit. The Danish mainland, which is situated on top of Germany, is called Jylland or Jutland and for us kids Legoland situated in Jylland was the experience of the trip. The flat land must constantly fight sand dunes and in northern Jylland there is a church half buried in the sand.

Copenhagen is a beautiful city with a relaxed atmosphere. Denmark is called by the adjective “dejelig”, which means happy and for some reason travelers feel happy in Copenhagen. This is not due to akvavit schnapps or Tuborg beer but to the attitude that everything does not have to be taken seriously and life is meant to be enjoyed. This can be seen from people’s expressions, their clothes, buildings and from the flower glory in parks and from the fact that everything works despite the relaxedness.

Danish food is not especially well-known but pork is often served as is heavy food in general. Maybe this is also an expression that food is meant to be enjoyed and not in order to have its calories counted. Danish smörrebröd, or open sandwiches, are filled with the most imagineous combinations and maybe the most recommendable ones contain fish or seafood. There is a lot of that in the waters of this island nation.
