Jordan

My Jordan experience is based on an organized day-trip from Eilat and if I say that the trip was the highlight of my Israel-Jordan- tour, it might describe as much about Israel as it does about Jordan. It would be interesting to spend more time in Jordan. After time-consuming border formalities the tourist bus drove through Jordan’s sunny resort Aqaba by the Red Sea through the gorgeous desert mountain scenery of Wadi Rum towards the highlight, the ruin city of Petra.

It is no wonder that Petra was elected one of the seven wonders of the world. You either drive, walk or ride through a canyon, which is surrounded by steep, beautiful fair-brown rock walls. At the end of the canyon there is a square, which is also surrounded by high rocks. At the other end of the square is the beautiful well-known Kazneh temple, which is carved into the rock wall. You notice that the whole area is full of similar carved caves, amphitheaters and stairs, filled with tourists.

When you have admired the architectural wonders well enough, there is time to try some of the services for tourists. I myself was interested in riding a donkey. When the price had been bargained and settled, I rode the donkey with the owner running beside us. After having ridden the agreed time, the owner wanted more money for having run beside us. We discussed the price a while and it still annoys me that this little episode is what I remember better than all the beauty of Jordan.

During the day-trip we were served Bedouin food close to Petra. The food consisted of mutton, chicken and rice, which had been stewed in hot pits in the desert sand. The meat was tender and tasted good.
