South Africa

10.01.2013, travelfood

This gorgeous tourism country slept Cinderella sleep during apartheid when the country was boycotted, but nowadays everyone has the chance to experience South Africas greatness. I visited the warm Capetown in January, when northern Europe is at its coldest, and enjoyed the safe, colourful and tasty city. It was a joy to sit at one of Waterfront’s restaurants while Table Mountain was calmly watching over the city.

South Africa is full of tasty specialities. Malesian immigrants have created snoorsnoek, a barracuda curry. Also the national dish bobotie casserole tastes a bit Malay. In South Africa there is a waterbloemtje water flower, which can be enjoyed cooked by itself or as a side order to for example breedie mutton stew. For snack the South Africans eat dried meat, biltong, of for example kudu antilope or springboek droewers sausages. I also tasted grilled ostrich filet marinated in orange and ginger as well as grilled kingklip, which is a whitefish.

During an efficient day-trip I visited Simon’s Town, where penguins posed for photographers and Muizenbergs white beaches, where a sea lion posed. Muizenberg is situated by the Indian Ocean where the sea water is much warmer than on the Capetown Atlantic side. The trip took me also to dramatic Cape of Good Hope and to picturesque wine town Stellenbosch. At the Cape of Good Hope I could actually see how two oceans met and how waters of different temperature and colours mixed.

When I told people that I would travel to South Africa the comments concerned robberies and evening unsafeness. I did not feel unsecure at any point during our trip although we walked on the streets in the late evening. We did pass by poorer townships and it is obvious that unemployment is a bigger problem among black people than among whites, but in practice I did not notice anything that would make me disencourage tourists from going there, on the contrary.
