Canada

Finns tend to like Canada. The Canadians are a step closer to Europe than USA and the climate and scenery resembles of Finland. If Americans love everything and everyone, the Canadians simply like the same things and this feels closer to our culture. For example big city Montreal has something that all European cities have, but no town in USA: cobble stone streets!

During my Greyhound bus trip in USA, I did two trips to Canada: one to Toronto and one to Montreal. These two cities are truly different and by that I do not only mean that Montreal is French-speaking and Toronto English-speaking. Montreal has an older background and a decorative architecture and even hills, while Toronto looks more modern in a functional way. When the bus approached Montreal via Quebec, it drove over a huge bridge to the other side of St Lawrence River.

From Toronto it is easy to go to the perhaps most well-known tourist sight in the US and Canada: the Niagara Falls. And they are impressive! It is impossible not to get wet from the droplet cloud of those water falls. Otherwise Toronto’s perhaps best known landmark is its CN Tower, which for a while used to be the tallest building in the world. During my second Canadian trip I realized how much Toronto actually resembles of New York, although in a smaller (and perhaps better!) way.

Canada does not have a specifically Canadian food, but everything is borrowed from other cultures that have immigrated to the country. Hamburgers are everywhere, but if you want tasty Chinese food you should visit the Chinatown of one of the big cities! There is a maple leaf on the Canadian flag and the maple syrup tastes good with your pancakes or in the other means that the syrup is available in. Canada’s national food is poutine, which is French fries in a sauce with cheese cubes in a brown sauce and it tastes indeed quite special.
